VOS Kids Project

The Project…

The Ski & Snowboard Show is delighted to have partnered with Caring Cancer Trust to create the exciting VOS Snow Kids Project.

“Did you get really bad bruises from the chemo? Did all your hair fall out? Wasn’t that the worst?” These
are some of the questions 10 kids battling cancer asked each other as they travelled to the mountains for a revitalising break from the stress. Overhearing their chatter, it quickly became clear to one of the trip volunteers, Angus MacWatt, that these kids had really needed a break.

“Listening to the kids talk among themselves about something that was so life impacting as if it was
an everyday chore made me realise that what we were embarking on was really worthwhile,”
he says.

Angus’ father Ian, once a keen skier himself, is the chairman of the Caring Cancer Trust and the brains behind the VOS Snow Kids project. He saw an opportunity to help children recovering from the illness regain their confidence and rediscover life’s joys by taking them out to the mountains and giving them the chance to learn to ski or snowboard. The trust teamed up with the Ski & Snowboard Show to raise funds for the project and each April for the past two years a group of kids have set off for La Plagne, France.

Most of the children had never been to the mountains before and for many it was the first time they had been away without their families. They put on skis and boots for the first time, fell over, pulled each other over and laughed a lot, and the bond between them grew as quickly as their confidence on skis. Angus says, “They learnt to ski extraordinarily quickly. Treatment was a million miles away in their minds and they all seemed to really benefit from the change.”

The project enters its third year in 2012 with children learning to ski with The Great Escape in Morzine, and snowboard with Oxygene Ski School in La Plagne. Graham Bell and Jenny Jones and patrons and dstinguished Ambassadors of the charity and expect to join the groups, as they did last year, giving their time, support and inspiration on the slopes to these vulnerable children.
